The Hidden Risks!

September 18th, 2008

The worst form of acne home remedy is self medication. Your friend suffers from acne and so do you; however, the medicine that the dermatologist prescribes for her may not suit you at all. Blindly following your friend and popping pills or applying creams may actually worsen your acnes’ condition. On the other hand, reading beauty books to help acne and whipping up skin care masks may prove to be a time consuming and futile attempt. To begin with, these books are for a general audience, and may not cater to your personal skin problems. Therefore, before you jump into acne home remedy treatment, ensure that it especially concentrates on your problems.

The major hidden problems of an acne home treatment are that it may have side affects if you are not too aware of your skin condition. Using the wrong kind of therapy may hamper your skin on the hind sight. Secondly, since a home treatment chiefly involves the use of raw foods, direct contact to acids from fruits and vegetables may cause skin irritation. Also, home remedies may not be worth all your efforts and money if they do not help fill collagen to the areas that are depressed by the scars.

In short, acne home remedies may be fruitful if you have the right knowledge about your condition and that of the ingredients you use. It is worth to do some research or consult your medical practitioner before you start your new acne home remedies.

How Else Can the Doctor Help Me?

September 13th, 2008

If you are scared that antibiotics might affect you negatively, there are other treatments that your doctor can help you with. Some of these are

1 Oral contraceptives: Oral contraceptives, which are low in estrogen to promote safety, have little effect on acne one way or the other. Some contraceptive pills have been to shown to have modest effectiveness in treating acne.

2 Cortisone Injections: To make large pimples and cysts flatten out fast, doctors inject them with a form of cortisone.

3 Isotretinoin: is a wonderful treatment for severe, resistant acne, used on millions of patients since it was introduced in 1982. It is used for patients with severe acne, chiefly of the cystic variety.
A concern, much discussed in the popular press, is the risk of depression and suicide in patients taking isotretinoin. In fact, large-scale studies have shown no increased risk for depression and suicide in those taking isotretinoin compared with the general population. Although it is important for those taking this drug to report mood changes (or any other symptoms) to their doctors, even patients who are being treated for depression are not barred from taking isotretinoin, whose striking success often improves the mood and outlook of patients who have suffered and been scarred from acne for years.

4 Laser treatments: Recent years have brought reports of success in treating acne using lasers and similar devices, alone or in conjunction with photosensitizing dyes. It appears that these treatments are safe and can be effective. However, what isn’t clear at this time, is how long the effects will last. In addition, health insurers do not generally reimburse for these procedures, so they can be costly. At this point they are best thought of as adjuncts to conventional therapy, rather than as substitutes.

5 Chemical peels: Whether the superficial peels (like glycolic acid) performed by Estheticians, or deeper ones performed in the doctor’s office, chemical peels are of modest, supportive benefit only, and in general do not substitute for regular therapy.

Type of Acne

September 8th, 2008

Acne can be scary, but do not fear! You can prevent acne from taking over your life! Like everything else, you first need to know what kind of acne you have, before you go in for a treatment. Once you know the kind of acne you have, you can probably identify the cause and then take your treatment forward. This article talks about the broad types of acne.

Acne is broadly classified into two types, Inflammatory and Non Inflammatory , with further sub types of pustules, cysts, white heads or black heads etc.. these are discussed as follows

Non Inflammatory Acne

Microcomedones become non-inflamed skin blemishes called comedones–either a whitehead or a blackhead. Whitehead are formed when trapped sebum and bacteria stay below the skin. They show up as tiny white spots or they may be so small that they are invisible to the naked eye. Blackheads are formed when the pores open to the surface and the sebum , which contains melanin, oxidises and turns black/ brown. Blackheads can last for a long time because the contents are slow to drain to the surface.

Inflammatory Acne

A blackhead or whitehead can release its contents to the surface and heal. Or, the follicle wall can rupture and inflammatory acne can ensue . This rupture can be caused by random occurrence or by picking or touching the skin.

A Papule is formed when there is a freak in the follicular wall and the White Blood Cells rush in and the pore becomes inflamed. A Pustule forms several days later when white blood cells make their way to the surface of the skin. Commonly referred to as a “zit” or a “pimple”.

An inflamed lesion can sometimes completely collapse or explode, severely inflaming the surrounding skin, and sometimes engulfing neighbouring follicles. Nodules are large inflamed bumps that occur when a follicle breaks along the bottom. These can be sore to touch. Cysts are large pus filled lesions.

Now that you know what kind of acne you have, you can go on and read up on the possible cause of what might have caused it. Once you know why and what, then you can look up on the various treatments available. Congratulations! You have taken steps towards a acne free skin.
