Most of us use acne as a collective term and cannot segregate or tell the various types of acne apart. While reading about skin diseases, one comes across various words that that may not be quite understandable. It is therefore essential to know about the various kinds of acne before we read into any of that.

1. Lesion—lesion is an all purpose word used to describe a physical change in the body that can be caused by a disease or an injury. Depending on the region of occurrence, lesion can be external or internal. External lesion is caused by acne, skin cancer, psoriatic plaque and knife cut. Internal can be caused due to lung cancer, atherosclerosis of the blood vessels cirrhosis of the liver etc.

Thus now we know when we read about acne lesions, it means a physical change in the skin, caused by some disease in the sebaceous follicle or gland.

Narrowing down to acne lesion, we should now know that in skin jargon, even that is a broad term. It is used for a variety of eruptions, ranging from comedones (scientific term for the well known blackheads and whiteheads.) to the more serious nodules and cysts.
